It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!

Welcome back!  I'm glad to be back and crafting after such a very long time.  It's almost Christmas and it's the perfect season to start crafting.  I think this just happens to be my busiest time of the year.  Not because of shopping, or because of work, but because I love to decorate my house with handmade items.   Every year I made my greeting cards, tags, bows and other items that are perfect for gift wrapping.

I started this year looking through Cricut to see what types of projects that have pre made.  While going through I found this cute little snowman.  Now this is great for decoration or can truly be used to add in some treats.  I did ent up modifying the item some to be able to match my theme this year.

What you'll need:

  • Cricut Cutting File
  • Red & Black Plaid Cardstock
  • Orange Plaid Cardstock
  • Green Plaid Cardstock
  • White Cardstock
  • Red Cardstock
  • Glue
  • Boning Folder
  • 3D Foam Squares
Once you have cut out your items using your Cricut, you are now ready to begin.  Make note that the original project uses light chipboard in white and black for this, but I chose to use the cardstock since I'm only using this for decoration and it's easier to fold and crease.  You will note that I made some variances from the original file.  I also a believe that using a combination of plain and pattern paper really give a project some depth.

You will have 2 white hexagon boxes and lids, 1 black hexagon box, 1 black circle, 2 bowties,  2 black eyes, 2 eye shines, 1 cone with scallops, 1 holly leaf and 1 holly berry.

Step 1:

I like to start with the smaller parts first so I don't loose them.  So I began with the bow.

I used the boning knife to curl one of the bow pieces.  this will give your bow a 3D effect.

One you have cured glue down the center of the curled bow to the center of the flat bow piece.

<<<This is what it should look like.

Step 2:

Next will be the carrot nose.

The original file did not have a nose, but asked for the purchase of a small plastic or paper maché carrot.  I decided to use a cone cut out that had scallops.

First glue one side of the cone to the other to create the cone.   Next fold down the  scallops and set it aside.

Step 3:

Next work on the eyes.

Set the teardrops turned inwards towards each other.   After glue down the eye shine circles on the right side of each teardrop.

**Note if you use opposite sides or opposite side it will look cross-eyed.

The original file did not have a set of eyes, but asked for the maker to draw them on.

Step 4:

Here you will use a small 3D square or circle to adhere the holly berry to the holly leaf.

Again this is something that I added onto the original file just to git this project more detail.

On To The Boxes!

The assembly process for all three boxes will be the same with the exception of the black circle to create the rim of the top hat on the black box.  You will have the box itself and the box top for each of the boxes.  You will also see that the Cricut machine has created the score lines to fold along.

Step 5:

Now begins the box assembly. begin my folding inwards the three sides that have the tabs at the bottom.  Fold those tabs inward and the top tab outwards.   Next fold the three sides with the top tabs in towards the centers.  Fold the top tab inwards and then backwards.  Fold the side tabs outwards as well.

Step 7:

Once all your boxes all together you are ready to begin the final assembly.

Begin by making sure all of your boxes have their tops on foe this process. Add glue to the bottom of the smaller white box and glue it to the center ot the top of the larger white box.

Step 8:

Now work the top hat by gluing the bottom of the black box to the center of the black circle.

Step 9:

Add glue to the top of the box stack and glue on the top hat in the center.

Step 10:

Now it's time to add the trimming to the to the hat.  Begin by trimming a 3/4" strip from a 12" paper in a red patterned paper.  This will act as a ribbon around the top hat.  Start by gluing it at the front and glue each side individually so that you can fold the paper around each corner.  this will overlap in the front you will glue down the holly piece on the overlapping seam to cover it.

Step 11:

Time to work the face of the snowman.  Place glue to the folded down scallop of the orange code.  Glue this to the bottom portion of the smaller white box in the center.  This will act as a carrot.  Next glue the eyes on either side of the carrot  as depicted.

We are now down to the last step.  Adhere the bowtie to the center of the larger box.
